Senator Schumer plans to fast-track the legislation.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said there is no time to tamper with changes to the debt ceiling bill passed by the House. He stated, “We can’t send anything back to the House. That would risk default, plain and simple.”
However, some senators are reluctant to approve the legislation. Three have indicated they plan to introduce amendments, which, were any passed, would send the legislation back to the lower chamber.
Senator Schumer said, “The Senate will stay in session until we send a bill avoiding default to President Biden’s desk, we will keep working until the job is done. Time is a luxury the Senate does not have if we want to prevent a default.”
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said June 5 is the date the United States would be unable to meet its obligations.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For members of the Senate as they debate and vote on the “Fiscal Responsibility Act.”
- For wisdom for senators who plan to introduce amendments to the legislation.
- For members of the senate who may be considering parliamentary procedures to delay the vote.
